FREE WORKSHOP: Raising Awareness of the Impact of Bullying on Older Adolescents & Young Adults w/ Developmental Disabilities
Concerns about bullying have primarily focused on the school, a setting in which many older adolescents and young adults with development disabilities continue to receive an education until they are 21. Students with disabilities, including those with developmental and intellectual disabilities, are among the most vulnerable of all populations involved in bullying and may carry the behavioral and emotional results of this negative childhood experience with them as they mature. The NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights (ABR), which specifies the school’s legal responsibilities to address harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) affords these students protection by its mandate to address HIB motivated by the actual or perceived distinguishing characteristics, such as those with a real or perceived disability. This workshop will provide an opportunity for those working with persons with developmental disabilities to consider the impact bullying has had on these consumers.
